Searching for more in worship

Our staff team spent a day away recently at a retreat centre near to Cheltenham and we were really fortunate to have Barry Kissell come and speak and minister to us. Many of you may know Barry from his New Wine days - he used to host the event with David Pytches in the 90’s and his humorous style and pinpoint prophetic accuracy were (and still are) legendary. A little piece of Canaan

I am realistic.

I am aware that I will not ever be the most well known or ‘successful’ worship leader in the world. And I’m fine with that. Actually, that kind of ministry looks like more hassle than it’s worth - I’m sure it’s a constant mine field of mixed motivations and potential compromises. And I’m not sure I’m global-worship-leader- role-model material anyway. Read more »

The Carl Tuttle Story

Many of you may know that Carl Tuttle was John Wimber’s worship leader in the formative years of the Vineyard movement. I recently came across some of his writing about his story, and he has given me permission to reproduce it here on Heart Head Hands. New Wine has so much to thanks the Vineyard - so much of what we are about came out of the influence of John Wimber nearly 20 years ago, and in particular, our worship DNA. Enjoy the article. It’s quite long, but it’s a great read. (Read more on his website carltuttle.com) Read more »

Big Challenges

I have been leading worship for some 25 years now and it has been a great journey. I have never had a huge plan for profile, or for influence but have often found myself in that place. For some strange reason, I find myself increasingly in a position where I am gathering and cheering on and encouraging more and more worship leaders. I find it strange because I still consider myself as a pretty average worship leader and technically not very proficient. Read more »

Working out unity

One of the most common issues that worship leaders raise with me is that of frustration with the leaders and people they work within their church: worship leaders who are desperate for change, but whose pastor seems unconvinced; worship leaders who share a stage with people they are uncomfortable with from either a theological or character point of view; worship leaders who are desperate to grow in leadership but aren’t finding the support or encouragement they need from those around them. Onward and upward

Plateau; we are all tempted to do it. We want to reach a point where we can stop; where there is no cold wind blowing or storm brewing; where we can take stock and enjoy the view across the road we’ve taken upward, grateful we’re not where we were.

It can be a good thing - to take in all that God has done in our church family - but before we know it, the people will set up camp and begin to build tents and lay foundations. ‘Hey, this is a comfortable spot - much better than where we started from – let’s stay here for a while.’ Read more »

The steady pace of passion

One of the things that I value most in the people I work with these days is an ability to walk this road of ministry with a steady pace of passion. There are plenty of people - good people, gifted people - whom I have worked with over the 25 years I have been in worship ministry who have burst forward on a tide of enthusiasm for some project or another, only to give up and fade away very quickly. We love such people, of course, and we value their periodical contributions to church life. But it’s very hard to build anything of significance with them. Read more »
